About Matti Nijboer
My name is Matti Nijboer. I am the textile artist behind Mattimat. As a farmer’s daughter, I was born and raised among the fields of the wide countryside of North Flevoland. Ever since I was a kid, I love to create. I was most happy with just a piece of paper and colored pencils. With these items I would be in my own imaginary world for hours.
Career
Even though my wish was to study at the School of Arts and Theatre, I thought it would be difficult to make a living as an artist. Therefore, I studied Creative Therapy Drama, got my bachelor’s degree in Education for children with special needs and worked in various business areas, such as law, accountancy and, at the moment, IT. In my current job I also design. I visualize complex theories and abstract methods, by illustrating and animating them.
Passion
Years went by and I started to feel the need to do more with my passion for art. In the beginning of 2022 I started designing wall hangings in my spare time. And this is where it all started…
In april 2022 I entered the mondial A’ Design Competition in Milan with my wall hanging Eclipse. Many people saw the beauty in it. With a high score, I achieved the status Runner Up. This motivated me. After designing some of my own work and completing a few commissions, I decided to start as an entrepreneur.
Cause and effect
I continued and created the name Mattimat. My name is Matti and mat is Dutch for rug, carpet or tapestry. For me, Mattimat is also synonym for cause and effect. I am the creator of my creations and my creations effect spaces and interiors.
